Berks County Jump Start Incubator

Project Overview

Background:

The City of Reading entered Act 47 in 2009 and continues to boost one of the highest unemployment rates in the Commonwealth with the average unemployment rate over 14% over the past 12 months. Furthermore, in September, 2011, Reading was recognized as having the highest poverty level of all middle sized urban areas in the United States. Despite a concerted effort by local economic development groups to recruit new corporations to the Reading area the return on investment from this sort of economic activity is lacking. Therefore, a new economic development strategy is urgently needed if Reading is going to be able to rise from the brink of its financial crisis.

Business incubators nurture the development of entrepreneurial companies, helping them survive and grow during the start-up period, when they are most vulnerable. These programs provide their client companies with business support services and resources tailored to young firms. The most common goals of incubation programs are creating jobs in a community, enhancing a community’s entrepreneurial climate, retaining businesses in a community, building or accelerating growth in a local industry, and diversifying local economies.

Business incubation is a business support process that accelerates the successful development of start-up and fledgling companies by providing entrepreneurs with an array of targeted resources and services. These services are usually developed or orchestrated by incubator management and offered both in the business incubator and through its network of contacts. A business incubator’s main goal is to produce successful firms that will leave the program financially viable and freestanding. These incubator graduates have the potential to create jobs, revitalize neighborhoods, commercialize new technologies, and strengthen local and national economies.

Our Mission:

The Jump Start Incubator (JSI) is a collaborative effort between the Berks County Community Foundation and the Kutztown University Small Business Development Center. The mission of JSI is to be a catalyst for innovation and entrepreneurial development, to cultivate viable business concepts, provide a solid foundation of support through their critical start-up phase, accelerate commercialization and stimulate growth; enabling emerging companies to secure long-term sustainability, create jobs, increase the tax base, diversify the economy, and enhance the quality of life in the Reading, Pennsylvania region.

What We Do:

The Jump Start Incubator is a temporary home for start-up businesses in the Greater Reading Area that provides them with the intellectual, monetary, and leadership capital necessary for their success during their critical development period. We help businesses to become self-sufficient and reach their potential. After incubation firms are expected to transition out into Reading and Berks County and become leading businesses furthering economic development, creating new jobs, and increasing the tax base in the city.

The Jump Start Incubator (JSI) helps to launch and grow exciting, innovative firms that will become the cornerstones of a revitalized city. Located in The Berks County Community Foundation’s (BCCF) certified LEED Platinum Green Building, the JS campus is in the heart of Reading, Pennsylvania’s economic development district. JSI serves on-campus and off-campus entrepreneurs as they navigate the pre-incubation, incubation and graduation stages of business startup. On-campus clients benefit from discounted rates to be headquartered in newly constructed business suites and have access to all of the facility’s features, including: furnished suites, a comprehensive communications/IT package, parking, access to conference facilities, and a receptionist, access to business resources and databases and hands-on support from Kutztown University Small Business Development (SBDC) staff. Tenants may spend two years in the incubator. Upon completion of the first year, the tenant and incubator staff will discuss renewing the tenant's stay for the second year. In exceptional circumstance the tenant, Jump Start Incubator staff, and advisory board may agree that it is beneficial to extend the tenant's stay beyond the second year. All of our entrepreneurs will have access to our training, coaching, mentoring and networking services as well as our pool of technical service providers.

Our Services:

Training:

JSI offers a series of programs tailored to each of the three stages of startup. These programs blend physical and on-line workshop environments, incorporating National Business Incubator Association (NBIA) best practices to integrate established curriculums such as Kauffman FoundationĀ® with customized packages developed by JSI and its economic development partners. Topics include, but are not limited to: pre-assessment and feasibility analysis, business plan and projections development, financial statement analysis, commercialization, marketing, social media, strategic planning, access to capital, QuickBooks training, human resource management, budgeting, and succession planning.

Coaching:

On-site KUSBDC staff work hand in hand with clients to develop a disciplined planning process with defined milestones and outcomes. Coaches meet formally once a week with on-campus and once a month with off-campus clients to assess progress and develop actionable planning steps. Coaches are also available on a daily basis to assist clients with issues that require immediate attention.

Mentoring:

Mentors help entrepreneurs do the right things, avoid pitfalls, and get back up when they stumble. They also help these entrepreneurs connect with the resources needed to start their businesses. JSI mentors are some of the most successful businesspersons and entrepreneurs in Berks County. JSI staff will assist you to establish an advisory board of “been there, done that” A-list professionals that will share their wisdom on an on-going basis and help you focus on the key factors for achieving goals.

Service Providers:

Clients benefit by having access to established service providers at no or reduced costs. JSI works with a number of professional service providers in the community such as law firms, accounting and CPA firms, marketing and advertising firms, investment organizations, insurance companies and others that offer products and services relevant to our clients. A number of service providers come to the incubator periodically, while others are available as needed to give guidance and advice. The initial assistance is provided free-of-charge to the client. If more extensive services are needed, the client is responsible for forming a fee-based relationship with the service provider.

Networking:

Networking is getting to know those who can truly make a difference, whether incubator clients, entrepreneurs, representatives of the larger business community, or potential customers and funders. The JSI will organize networking activities, from “brown bag” lunch events aimed at client interaction, to public events that draw in the local business community and focused problem-solving sessions to select clients and stakeholders.

Information Session: There will be general information sessions on Monday, December 12, 6-8 pm and Tuesday, December 13, 9-11 am at JSI facilities, located in the Berks County Community Foundation Building, 237 Court Street, Reading, Pa 19601.
